Evansville boxing favorite Kevin Payne passed away Sunday afternoon from injuries sustained in his fight Saturday against Ryan Maraldo. It was a tough eight-round battle in which Payne won a split decision, but he had to be taken to the hospital immediately after the fight. Although he underwent brain surgery in an attempt to save his life, it wasn't enough to keep him with us. Payne was looking forward to a promised match with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and it is a true tragedy that his life was ended so early. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.

In what could have been an easier win for Chavez by boxing more and using the jab, he instead opted for a head to head battle in his rematch against Carlos Molina. Chavez's action early on had Molina running a bit in the later rounds, but Molina still managed to land more punches in the fight. However, It was Julito landing the harder punches, which hurt Molina a number of times. Molina hung in there, though, and the six-round fight went to the scorecards again. One judge had it even and the other two scored it 58-56 for Chavez, upping his record to (24-0-1). Chavez did not state when his next fight would be, but it may be on the undercard of the Mayweather-Judah bout on April 8.

Sinaloan fighter Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, just 19 years old, has had 24 professional fights--10 in this past year and 11 in 2004.

Last Friday in Monterrey, the son of former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez failed to get the win for the first time since his debut as a pro boxer in September 2003.

Perhaps his constant good luck in the ring was responsible for this diminished performance against Carlos Molina, with whom he scored a draw after six rounds. The fighter stated that his force left him throughout the fight.

For Doctor Pedro Sanchez, who has been working with the World Boxing Council (WBC) for a some years, Julio Jr's intense activity doesn't directly affect him unless he's hit a lot or the fights are elongated, like what happened last Friday in the Monterrey Arena.

"Everything depends on his condition and the punches. If he (Julio) knocks them out in the first or second round, there's no problem. That Julio is 19 years old and has so many fights isn't a problem since he runs and trains daily.

"But the recommendation is that if an individual fights more than 50% of the scheduled distance of his fights and receives a lot of blows, even though he is well-trained, what he needs is to take a rest and not to fight as frequently," stated Sanchez Barajas.

Chavez Jr's last two fights were extended lengths. Against Molina it went to a decision, and in October he won in the fifth round against Jeremy Stiers in a bout scheduled for six rounds.

On the same course

Julio Jr. is following in his father's footsteps, who had 116 fights in the 25 years of his career.

When he started, in the early 80s, the "Caesar of Boxing" put on the gloves in any ring he happened to come across.

Julio Sr. in his second year as a pro fighter in 1981 fought up to three times in the span of one month.

The first time Chavez Sr. didn't win--a draw against Pernell Whitaker--was after 13 years as a pro fighter.

Used to challenges, Julio Cesar Chavez Carrasco told boxlatino.com that his desire now is to fight once more with Carlos Molina.

"What follows in my career depends on my rematch with Molina. If I can't beat him, I don't have any reason to keep boxing," he affirmed.

Last weekend in Monterey, Nuevo Leon, Julito scored a draw that felt more like a loss against Molina, whose professional record is now 8-1-1.

"Honestly I don't know what happened to me. I feel I wasn't fighting well... I started pressuring him late and I wasn't able to win, but I don't have any excuses," stated the son of the legendary JC Chavez.

The Chavez-Molina rematch could take place February 11 in Culiacan or February 18th in Las Vegas, according to promoter Fernando Beltran.

"The rematch will be different. The only word in my mind is 'Win, win...'"

Julito will spend Christmas and the New Year at home with his family in Culiacan and on January 2nd will head to the Mexican capital to start his training in the Nuevo Jordan gym. Accompanying him on this trip will be his uncle Rodolfo Chavez and two sparring partners.

A rematch between Julito Cesar Chavez and the man who almost ended his undefeated streak last Friday in Monterrey, Carlos Molina, could take place January 28 in the Plaza de Toros in Cancun, during the World Boxing Council's Night of Champions celebration.

Such was stated by Jose Sulaiman, noting that there was great enthusiasm among the Quintana Roo authorities for what would be one of the WBC's greatest events in 2006.

Also for this card, they're planning a second match between Jorge "Travieso" Arce, WBC interim flyweight champion, and the fighter who recently almost defeated him, Nicaraguan Adonis Rivas.

Sulaiman stated that there had been a strong protest on the part of Rosendo Alvarez, representing Rivas, and of the title contender himself that the fight was stopped over a cut which wasn't very dangerous but "because it ended up being too risky for the triumphant career of the Los Mochis fighter."

Sulaiman also confirmed that Jackie Nava would defend her superbantamweight title against American Kelsey Jeffries and that the Sonoran Lorenzo "Explosivo" Trejo would would meet Filipino Roderl Mayol.

The WBC head expressed optimism for the rebuilding of Cancun, stating that three weeks ago, he had come to this resort and found it in a bad state. "Now I see a lot of people working again, with many hotels back in business and the discos and other places typically open and receiving the public again. We want to participate in the goverment's plan to show the world that Cancun is back on its feet."

MONTERREY, NL, December 16 - Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. remains undefeated after a tough six-round battle with Carlos Molina, which went to a decision and which the judges ruled a draw.

Junior made his way to the ring at the Monterrey Arena with "Mexico Lindo y Querido" playing in the background and with immediate applause while his opponent was waiting for him in the ring.

Everything seemed to indicate a favorable night for Julito.

But when it came time to exchange blows, the story played out very differently.

Molina turned out to be a good boxer who showed little respect for the son of former world champion JC Chavez to the surprise of all present.

Chavez tried to respond. He looked for a fight that would best utilize his reach advantage over his rival, who didn't give him a single minute of rest. Julito chose to attack, mainly with hooks to the liver.

Molina had the initiative. However, Chavez stood in front of him waiting for the right moment to land his best punches, which on this occassion he didn't manage to land on his opponent.

This fight turned out to be difficult for Junior; Molina was very intelligent and never stopped throwing punches.

A short left hurt Julito, who instead of backing up looked to respond in similar form and did so, but not without any effect on Molina.

The fight advanced, Julito threw his best punches, but he could do little to hurt a Molina who wanted to become the first to defeat him, although he remained wholeheartedly in the fight until the end, when the judged declared it a draw.

With the style of Jorge Kahwagi, Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fought to a draw yesterday against Carlos Molina of Michoacan in a bout scheduled for six rounds at the Monterrey Arena. A draw that was for many a dressed-up loss.

After 11 years of waiting, the fans in Monterrey returned to see a Chavez in the ring, but it would be a deception. In Julio Cesar Chavez Sr's fight against Tony Lopez in the baseball stadium of Nuevo Leon there was a huge gate, very similar to that of Julio Jr. yesterday. The only difference between that event headlined by the "Cesar" and that of his son was the quality of the boxing, such that accoring to MILENIO-La Aficion the Sinaloan fighter was overmatched in every sense. One clear example was the seventh round, in which Molina landed 24 accurate punches compared to one from the son of the former world champion.

But the public didn't believe the deception, for which as soon as the draw was announced, immediately they started booing and whistling.

Molina, with just a short career of 8 wins with 4 KOs, 1 loss and one draw, was able to put Chavez on the spot, who has a record of 23 wins with 18 knockouts.

Up until now, Julio Jr. has maintained his almost perfect record but against insignificant opponents. The most experienced his has faced was the American Ruben Galvan, who in his 33 years has accumulated 24 wins, 9 knockouts, 7 losses and two draw.

Jorge Arce defended his WBC flyweight title against the Nicaraguan Adonis Rivas with little surprise. "El Travieso" gained the TKO victory due to a cut over Rivas' left eye. The contest ended in the tenth round.

With optimism, Fernando Beltran hopes that Zanfer Promotions will gain new ground and that by the end of 2006 there will be a world title bout for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Beltran is confident that next year JC Jr. would have enough experience to win a world title.

"In the first quarter [of next year], we'll look for Julito to continue climbing the international ranks, so by the end of the year he'll be able to star in a world title fight," said the promoter.

He admitted that the announcement is a bit premature, but he's sure that Chavez's abilities as a fighter will help to fulfill this goal.

For now, he assures that they will start to put him in ten-round bouts against opponents of a somewhat higher caliber so that the 19-year-old can gain experience.

Currently, Julio Cesar Jr. carries an undefeated record of 23 wins, 18 of those by knockout.

Mexico, Dec 9 (Notimex) - Mexican boxers Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Antonio "Barrio" Meza will be in the capital of Nuevo Leon on December 16th for an event at the Monterrey Arena.

The Sinaloan Chavez Carrasco (23-0, 18 KOs) will compete in his tenth bout of the year and will have as his opponent the American Kevin Payne (13-5-1, 6 KOs), 33 years, who has not fought since November of 2004 when he was defeated by veteran Marty Jakubowski.

The unbeaten Chavez and Payne will exchange blows in a bout scheduled for six rounds at superlightweight.

Antonio "Barrio" Meza will fight against the #3 nationally ranked super bantamweight, Lizardo Moreno, in a ten-round bout.

Meza (18-1, 14 KOs) has fought his way back up after his setback at the hands of Ricardo "Piolo" Castillo at the Plaza Calafia, thus obligating him to fight Lizardo Moreno (15-2, 12 KOs).

The American Grover Wiley has resoundingly refused a fight in Culiacan, Sinaloa, against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. next December, but he left the door open for next year, with the fight taking place in the United States, according to Julito's manager Rodolfo Chavez.

Julio Cesar Chavez doesn't want to pass into history without everyone knowing his accomplishments. For this, on November 29th he'll meet up with the American actor and producer Sylvester Stallone to fine tune the details for what will be the movie depicting his life.

"I'm very happy to have the opportunity to record everything I've lived through. It's a way to leave something of myself," said Julio Cesar Chavez, in an exclusive with MILENIO-La Aficion.

He who was the first Mexican to win three world titles in different weight classes has put his gloves to the side in exchange for what will be one of the "most important projects of his life."

He stated that he hadn't originated the idea, but that simply "they came to me with the project and I liked it a lot, because they're not just going to record aspects of my life as a boxer. They intend to reflect my life from all angles."

The rumor has arrived from Culiacan that Rodolfo Chavez, brother of Julio Cesar Chavez, is in full training already with the desire to get the gloves back out and return to the ring.

Rodolfo became one of the chief trainers of Julio Cesar some years ago and is now in charge of the preparation of a handful of Sinaloan fighters in Culiacan, in addition to managing the career of Julio Cesar Chavez Carrasco, the son of JC.

But a couple of weeks ago, Rodolfo stepped up his training with the idea of returning to the ring to try his luck in a few fights.

The news notes that Rodolfo's family is opposed to his return to the ring, considering him to have already left his best years for the task behind.

Rodolfo is characterized as a technical boxer, with a good punch, and there was a time in which the three Chavezes fought: Julio Cesar, Rodolfo and Rafael Chavez, who was nicknamed "Borrego."

With his next fight on November 12th being cancelled, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. demanded that his next opponent be the conqueror of his father, Grover Wiley. Arrangements are being made to schedule the fight for 64.5 kg (142 lbs), that is to say, between superlightweight and welterweight, on December 17th in Culiacan, Sinaloa.

Manager Rodolfo Chavez, uncle of the fighter, said that "he's set on his next opponent being Wiley; he doesn't want anyone else, for which reason promoter Fernando Beltran has been working on putting this fight together."

About the function, he emphasized that it was scheduled for December17th in Culiacan and they would start publicity for the fight shortly, intending to have a full house.He recognized that it's a difficult fight. To avenge his father's final loss is the catch phrase and the intention of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. before the end of the year.

For that reason, the undefeated local fighter has announced that he's bringing to Culiacan his match against the American Grover Wiley on December 17th, in a large arena which could be the Polideportivo at the Autonomous University or the "Carlos González y González" stadium.

Three-time world champion JC Chavez lost in a farewell fight September 17th in Phoenix to Wiley by technical knockout in five rounds, and his son swore on that night that he would avenge the loss, challenging the American fighter.

Julito wanted Grover for his opponent the 12th of this month in Las Vegas, but due to the American fighter being above weight it was difficult to schedule the fight for that date. Chavez Jr. will instead take on Kevin Payne (13-5-1 with 6 knockouts) as the opponent, a match which will serve as preparation for his bout with Wiley.

"I wanted this fight (against Grover) to be in Culiacan, and we're going to fill the arena with the support of Fernando Beltran (his promoter and representative)," said Chavez Jr. by telephone from Tijuana, where he is preparing for his confrontation with Payne.

Julito hopes that more de 10,000 people will be able to attend his fight with Grover, for which reason he wants the bout to be held somewhere with that capacity or higher and has been considering the Polideportivo or the soccer stadium.

"I want to fill the arena, and we're going to have cheap prices starting from 30 pesos for the least expensive," indicated the son of the Mexican boxing legend.

He also hopes for a bout between Jesus "Azul" Iribe and "Picoco" Leon, and to include on the card Orlando "Torito" Escobar, the Tijuanan "Baby" Zepeda and prospects from the "JC Chávez" gym Geovanni Lopez and Geovanni Inzunza.

With the intention of hearing the advice which at one time helped his father to become the greatest Mexican fighter of all times, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has been training the past two weeks in Tijuana, under the supervision of Don Romulo Quirarte.

Everyday starting at 4 p.m. the young prospect nears his stop, to set out for the CREA building in the Zona del Río, where he spends two hours letting loose his fists and facing opponents in practices which will build his experience.

"I've known Don Romulo since I started boxing and this isn't my first time working with him; he's a good trainer and here there are also a lot of guys that I can box with to gain experience and more confidence," he commented.

Chavez Jr. is in preparation for his fight which will take place on November 12th in Las Vegas, Nevada, against the American Kevin Payne, to afterwards make his ten-round debut in December in Culiacan, where he will face Grover Wiley, who beat his father in his last fight.

For Julio Jr., the name and the history that his father left him is a benefit. Even though it's been difficult to have to carry the weight of his father's achievements, the advice that he receives from his father and his dedication have helped his career to get off to a quick start.

"I've learned a lot from him. He always helps me in my career and is at my side," he stated.

For many boxing fans, the record of 23-0 with 18 knockouts which Chavez Jr. has accumulated, is inflated and his career has been glossed up from the start. Nevertheless, the son of the legend appeared confident in himself and assured that time would determine who's right.

"The people have every right to wonder and to talk, but I don't like talking. I do my work and with time I'm sure I'll demonstrate what I've learned and what I'll continue to learn," he said.

NOTIMEX - The Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will fight against the American Kevin Payne on November 12th at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.

The Chavez-Payne match, scheduled for six rounds at lightweight, will be on the undercard of the event headlined by Ukranian Vitali Klitschko against the American Hasim Rahman for the WBC heavyweight championship.

At first it was announced that Julito would face Grover Wiley, who beat his legendary father last September in Phoenix, Arizona, in his second farewell fight for the latinos in the United States.

But owing to Wiley being over the weight (superwelter), Top Rank Promotions decided to change Julio Cesar Chavez Jr's opponent.

Also in action on the November 12th card will be Mexicans in world title bouts: Antonio Margarito against Manuel Gomez for the WBO welterweight belt and Martin Castillo-Alexander Muñoz for the WBA super flyweight belt.

Another Face of César

While recovering from his last loss, Julio Cesar Chavez intends to become a great promoter. Julio Cesar Chavez is still looking for a way to fill his free time. After his unexpected loss last September against the world-unreknowned Grover Wiley, due to a supposed broken hand, the Mexican wants to return to the ring, no longer as a boxer but as a promoter.

"Together with Azteca America I'm promoting boxing events. They provide the broadcasting and I provide the name," said Chavez by telephone to MILENIO-La Afición.

For the moment, he's supporting his son, Julio Cesar Chavez Carrasco, who made his pro debut in 2003 and who is being shared with Bob Arum's promotion Top Rank.

Chavez stated that soon he would increase his support for the boxers because he's looking to make his enterprise one of the most competitive in the market. Most likely is that, within a few months, he'll add to the team his younger son Omar Chavez.

The fighter had already ventured into boxing promotion but in an informal manner. Now, following his injury and operation, he decided to take up what he had abandoned.

"I like promoting, and I know that this will only work in the United States; that's why I started here. Honestly, I don't know if my project will be able to expand to Mexico; it's something that I haven't thought of right now," he commented.

Jose Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), and one of the largest followers of Julio Cesar's career, talked about the Sinaloan's new outlet. "It gives me much pleasure that Julio is finding new outlets and that he's taking into account what he'll have to do when he arrives at the imminent moment of retirement. It's a good option for him to become a promoter."

IN THE RING

About his return to the ring as a boxer, Chavez almost didn't want to speak. He confessed that he's not satisfied with his last farewell fight at the America West Arena in Phoenix, Arizona. "I'm very sad... I don't know what happened to me. I know that perhaps I disappointed a lot of people who expected a great farewell fight, but the injury prevented me from giving it to them," he related.

He explained that the loss to Wiley, who has a record of 30 wins with 14 knockouts, six losses and one draw against unknown fighters, could hasten his retirement. Of course, "I don't get much pleasure out of it anymore."

Nevertheless, his desire for vengeance could soon be satisfied. He asserted that, when his son Julio faces Wiley, the latter "won't have any more desire to fight another Chavez because my son will beat his head in."

THE FALL OF THE IDOL

Up until 1994, Julio Cesar Chavez was unbeatable. He remained undefeated against great fighters in the international arena, but he fell from his glory after 12 rounds against the unknown Frankie Randall. In 1998, Julio tried to make good his loss against the young Oscar de la Hoya, who ended the fight in the eighth round.

From that date began his decline. Willy Wise and Kostya Tszyu were added to the list of the Mexican's conquerors. The idea of retirement began to surface but, but instead of leaving like a champion, he faced fighters who hadn't had much success in the ring, as was the case of his last opponent, Grover Wiley.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Even now, the Mexican fighter doesn't know when he'll return to the ring. He's just waiting in Tijuana for his injury to heal and for the cast to be removed from his hand. After that he'll start his rehabilitation and look for an opponent to continue in his farewell tour.

Mexico, Oct 18 (Notimex) - The final farewell fight of the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez is in doubt due to his family's petition that he retire, but one fight remains in the contract for three fights that he signed with American promoter Bob Arum.

"I don't know if Julio will fight again after the injury he suffered against Grover Wiley in Phoenix. His brothers and sons don't want him to continue boxing any longer," commented Rodolfo Chavez by telephone from Culiacan, Sinaloa.

The difficulty of the three-time world champion in different divisions (superfeatherweight, lightweight and superlightweight) is that he signed a contract for three fights with Bob Arum, head of Top Rank Promotions, and he's only faced Ivan Robinson and the above-mentioned Wiley.

"If he completes his contract, he'll fight in December, but that'll be determined in the upcoming days," added Rodolfo.

Julio Cesar Chavez (107-5-1, 88 knockouts) was scheduled to face Jesse James Leija in San Antonio, Texas, for his final farewell fight, but the fracture in his right fist and his loss against Wiley on September 17th in Phoenix, Arizona, interfered with those plans.

"The whole family doesn't want to see him get back in the ring anymore, but we'll see what happens," finished Rodolfo Chavez.

JC Chavez Jr Scheduled Against World Ranked Fighters

Mexico, Oct 18 (Notimex) - The Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, son of the legendary fighter of the same name, will be fighting against world ranked fighters next year to test his abilities, after his meteoric rise in the professional realm.

"Junior didn't have amateur fights, and because of that we've been bringing him along slowly in his pro career. He's gotten better with each fight and he feels the support of the people, which motivates him to continue further," commented uncle and manager Rodolfo Chavez by telephone from Culiacan, Sinaloa.

Since his debut in September 2003 against Jonathan Hernandez in his native Culiacan, Chavez Carrasco (23-0, 18 knockouts) has remained undefeated as a professional, and up until now he's fought at lightweight and superlightweight.

"As of 2006 he'll be facing world ranked fighters. He's been steady in his training and hasn't ceased since his pro debut. He's eager, and has his whole family behind him," commented the interviewee.

In regard to Junior's next opponent, he commented that American opponent Grover Wiley is uncertain for the November 12th bout in Las Vegas, Nevada, owing to the weight of the conqueror of the legendary JC.

On September 17th in Phoenix, Wiley won a fifth-round technical knockout over JC, who could not continue his farewell fight at the America West Arena due to a broken fist.

The son of the three-time world champion is looking to avenge his father's loss, but Wiley is at superwelterweight, which prevents Top Rank promotions from making that fight.

"Against Julio, the American weight 152 pounds and to fight against Junior he'd have to get down to 140 pounds, and I don't think he can do it," commented trainer Rodolfo Chavez.

Julio Cesar Chavez Carrasco (23-0, 18 knockouts) expects to find out the name of his opponent in the coming days for his fight on the undercard of the event which will be headlined by mastodons Vitali Klitschko and Hasim Rahman for the WBC heavyweight title at the Thomas and Mack Arena in Las Vegas.
